Nintendo Switch Online update: GBA and more

Nintendo has released a significant update to the Nintendo Classics Game Boy Advance app for Nintendo Switch Online, introducing new features that enhance both functionality and presentation. The app, now at Version 3.0.0, has undergone a subtle rebrand, replacing the old “Switch Online” branding with the unified “Nintendo Classics” label. This change aligns it with Nintendo’s broader effort to standardize its retro game offerings across platforms, creating a more cohesive identity for its classic game libraries.

One of the most notable additions is full button remapping support. Players can now customize their control layouts for each game, allowing for a more comfortable and personalized gameplay experience. This feature, which was recently added to the SNES version of the Nintendo Classics app, is particularly welcome for titles with unconventional control schemes or for players who prefer a specific button configuration.

The update also brings a resolution boost for handheld play on Nintendo Switch 2, with supported titles now running at native 1080p. This enhancement delivers sharper visuals and improved clarity, making classic GBA games look better than ever on modern hardware. Alongside these technical improvements, Nintendo has added a charming easter egg: by holding the left analog stick when launching the app, users can trigger the original Game Boy Advance boot up animation, complete with authentic visuals and sound effects.

In addition to these functional upgrades, the update introduces a new startup sound inspired by Mario Advance, adding a playful touch to the app’s presentation. While no new GBA titles were added for all regions in this update, Japan received the cult favorite Magical Vacation, and players in other regions can explore new content in the Nintendo 64 library, such as Forsaken 64. These changes reflect Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to refining its retro game services, blending nostalgia with modern convenience to keep the classics fresh and engaging for today’s audience
