Former PlayStation chief says Nintendo knows its players best

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has publicly praised Nintendo for what he sees as an unmatched connection with its audience. Speaking in a recent interview with YouTuber HipHopGamer, Layden, who once served as President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, stated that “no one is more in touch with their fan base than Nintendo” adding that even during his tenure at PlayStation, the company never achieved the same level of fan engagement. His comments have sparked discussion across the gaming community, with many reflecting on Nintendo’s long-standing approach to its players.

Layden pointed to Nintendo’s consistency and focus as key reasons for its resilience in an industry that has seen significant fluctuations, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many publishers expanded rapidly during the surge in gaming demand, only to face sharp slowdowns later, Nintendo maintained its course. According to Layden, the company anticipated the eventual drop-off and avoided the “peaks and valleys” that come from chasing short term opportunities. Instead, it stayed committed to its own roadmap, grounded in a clear understanding of who its fans are and what they want.

This philosophy, Layden suggested, has allowed Nintendo to weather industry shifts more smoothly than its competitors. He credited the company’s ability to “see and understand their opportunity better than anyone else” and to execute on that vision with precision. For him, this deep alignment between Nintendo’s creative direction and its audience’s expectations is a defining strength, one that other publishers, including PlayStation, have struggled to match.

The timing of Layden’s remarks comes as Nintendo enjoys strong early momentum with the Switch 2, bolstered by a lineup that includes Metroid Prime 4, Donkey Kong Bananza, and the surprise revival Kirby Air Riders. Whether or not fans agree with his assessment, Layden’s comments highlight a perception that Nintendo’s enduring success is rooted in its iconic franchises and in a deliberate, long-term relationship with the people who play them.
